The summer holidays are barely halfway through. How are you coping? Do cries of “I’m bored!” echo throughout your house? If so, then maybe it’s time to start looking for new ways to entertain your children? TV shows, movies, and museum tours will only work for so long!
Finding garden toys for children
You don’t have to take your kids on expensive days out to keep them entertained. Some carefully selected garden toys for children can turn your backyard into a mini amusement park.
Younger kids are pretty easy to entertain, even if you don’t have a large back yard. Most kids will enjoy playing with a paddling pool, or a sand box, and you can get mini science kits with nets, magnifying glasses, trays, and bug-spotting leaflets that will make your child feel like a jungle explorer.
For kids that prefer being active, space hoppers, skipping ropes, bat and ball sets, and mini trampolines are a good choice. Even the smallest yard should be able to house these.
If you have the space, then climbing frames, swings and slides are always popular, and will make your child the envy of the neighbourhood. If you do invest in this sort of garden toy, then make sure that it is built properly, and secured well before allowing your child to play on it. Climbing frames will require careful maintenance and should be cleaned and inspected regularly. If there’s any rust, sharp edges, or other issues, then cover or take down the frame before anyone gets hurt.
Safety First
When buying garden toys for children, it’s important that you put safety first. It’s a good idea to buy from an established shop or catalogue, rather than an unknown seller. This country has stricter rules in terms of toy safety than some other countries, and if you’re buying second hand, or from an auction site, then it’s hard to be sure that you’re getting something safe and age-appropriate.
Another thing to bear in mind is the need for supervision. This is especially important for paddling pools climbing frames, and inflatable toys. Don’t just assume that because the kids are in the garden, they’re safe. It’s possible to drown even in a paddling pool, and inflatable toys have a habit of being picked up by the wind if they’re not tethered correctly.
The above warning isn’t meant to deter anyone from buying toys – most garden toys for children are perfectly safe, and most holidays go without incident, but it still pays to be watchful – just in case it’s your child that is the unlucky one this summer.
Young children are creative and have great imaginations, so if you give them even simple toys to play with, and space to enjoy themselves, then they can often keep themselves entertained for hours on end.
